The classification of Christian Science with hypnotism...
Rocky Mountain News
The classification of Christian Science with hypnotism and psychology by a recent writer in your columns was unfortunate, as they are basically and wholly dissimilar, in both teaching and operation, for the dynamic force in Christian Science practice, the divine Mind or Spirit, is not even recognized in the other teachings mentioned. Furthermore, hypnotism is acknowledged by its votaries as capable of producing evil, whereas Christian Science, being the law of God, good, can result in good only, and Christ Jesus said, "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit."
It is evident that "concentrated human will" and "sheer intellectual force" are largely responsible for the world war, and obviously that which causes a situation cannot cure it. Only as greed, lust, hatred, and fear are eliminated from human consciousness by the activity therein of love, purity, and confidence will the cause of strife be reached and annulled, and permanent peace be assured to mankind. And, as Mrs. Eddy has written in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 407), "Here Christian Science is the sovereign panacea, giving strength to the weakness of mortal mind,—strength from the immortal and omnipotent Mind,—and lifting humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to man."
Christian Scientists individually are doing all they can to end the war, not only by serving their country in whatever capacity they can, but also by prayerful endeavor to let that Mind be in them "which was also in Christ Jesus," for thus alone can the universal brotherhood of man be established.
