The Work of Healing

Christian Science rightly applied and rightly received heals completely and permanently, but we must be willing to comply with the requirements whereby the healing power of Truth can be demonstrated. It is very different in its requirements and operation from other curative systems, the healing being the result of the operation in human consciousness of spiritual law.

In applying to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, the patient must understand that treatment is a cooperative work, and that neither the practitioner nor the patient does the healing. The practitioner understands somewhat of the spiritual law, the law of Truth, also what God is, what man is, and the relation existing between God and man. His work is to realize this clearly, and to lead the patient to relinquish his false concepts of both God and man, thereby opening his consciousness to the operation of spiritual law.

A thought which seeks help through spiritual means while still clinging to the desire for material help, is verily a "house divided against itself," which cannot successfully withstand or destroy the claims of sickness. On page 167 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy we read, "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized;" and again, on the same page: "The scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way." Outward conformity to these requirements will, however, do very little to forward the healing, unless every suggestion of material help is excluded from consciousness and thought is held steadfastly to the omnipotence of God.
