It is with the greatest thankfulness to God and gratitude...
It is with the greatest thankfulness to God and gratitude to Mrs. Eddy that I write this testimony as another proof that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." My parents were both deeply religious people, but still their understanding of God was of no help to them in time of sickness, for from childhood I was not strong. Fear for my throat and lungs began when I was about one year old, and at the age of five a fall down a flight of stairs, causing blindness for five weeks, left me weak and frail. At intervals for several years I was confined to the house with severe illnesses, beginning usually with colds, and twice the attacks were considered to be what is called quick consumption.
Through care and a great ambition to be doing, I rose above these conditions and managed to hold positions of responsibility. When about twenty-five years old I was injured in a failroad accident, as a result of which I suffered from a derangement for which I was treated weeks at a time, during a period of several years. Finally an operation was all that I had to look forward to for relief, and as this was the one thing I had strongly opposed, I spent many sleepless nights dreading what seemed to be inevitable.
While in the West, where I had gone in the hope of finding health through a change of climate, the blessed truths of Christian Science were offered for my acceptance. At first I did not see that they were applicable to my need, as the material view of life blinded me to the glorious fact of spiritual perfection in God, good; but in an hour of utter despair I turned to God, and with the assurance of help the thought came to me that He had healed others and would heal me. I was instantaneously helped, so that I returned to my position the following morning instead of going for the operation. For weeks I carried with me the thought of God's ever-presence, with the result that I gained in weight and manifested great improvement. Then I met a Christian Scientist, who advised me to have the help of a practitioner. I did so, and am very grateful for having been led so wisely that I saw the need for earnest study of Christian Science.
