Among the Churches

Current Notes

Honolulu, Hawaii. — An undertaking of particular interest is the construction of an edifice for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Honolulu, Hawaii, the ground of which was broken during the first part of the month of June, 1917. During July, 1916, an architect was requested to furnish preliminary sketches and estimates for a church building to cost approximately forty thousand dollars. These sketches were approved by the building committee, and in November of that year the architect was instructed to prepare complete working drawings and specifications. Reputable local contractors were invited to submit estimates, and the lowest figure was sixty thousand dollars. On the recommendation of the architect the contract was awarded to the lowest bidder on the percentage basis. What makes the project particularly noteworthy is the fact that the progressive construction of the edifice is carried on by unsolicited subscription to the building fund, and the church membership is promoting every effort toward keeping financial pace with the structure. On the morning of July 24, 1917, the simple ceremony of laying the corner stone took place. The auditorium will have a seating capacity of eighty hundred people.

San Francisco, Cal. —A new Christian Science church has been formed in San Francisco. It is Eighth Church of Christ, Scientist, and will hold services in National Hall, 1975 Mission Street, for the first time to-morrow morning [Aug. 12]. National Hall has been occupied for several years past by the congregation of Second Church of Christ, Scientist; but with the growth of this church a new edifice was built at Dolores and Cumberland Streets, into which Second Church moved a month or so ago. A part of the congregation of Second Church will be taken over by Eighth Church. — San Francisco Examiner.
