When I became interested in the study of Christian Science...
When I became interested in the study of Christian Science I was not in search of physical healing, though I had long been afflicted with catarrh, stomach disorder, skin trouble, and a structural defect of the eyes for which glasses had been worn for some time. Friends who were students of Christian Science sometimes lovingly spoke to me of their religion when I seemed in need of its healing influence, but without arousing any apparent interest on my part. Upon one occasion, out of curiosity and regard for my employer's feelings I went with him to a Christian Science lecture, and at another time to a Wednesday evening meeting. While I was not impressed by anything that was said by the lectures or at the meeting, there was present an atmosphere of spirituality and love that made itself felt, as well as a manifestation of dominion on the part of those present that I had never recognized in any other church.
Afterward I attended another Christian Science lecture, this time of my own accord, for I was in search of Truth, and I was so illumined by the reflection of Love on the part of the lecturer and the Christian Science friends who greeted me there, that I became eager to learn more about this new-old religion. Since then, like our Leader, I have been "a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the Mind of Christ" (Science and Health, Pref., p. ix). A friend upon whom I subsequently called presented me with a copy of this book, which I began to study in connection with the Bible.
I went to a practitioner a few times for help in a business matter, which was handled satisfactorily, and to my astonishment and great delight discovered that my physical condition was undergoing a change. The catarrh and stomach disorder from which I had suffered for years disappeared; my eyes were healed, so that glasses were no longer needed, and subsequently the skin disease was entirely overcome.
