The father of persecution is fear; the basis of fear is...
Spencer (N. Y.) Needle
The father of persecution is fear; the basis of fear is belief in evil, in a power and intelligence apart from God, good; and the parent of this belief is a lie, for God is the only Mind, or Principle, the one source and cause of all that is real and eternal. Real Christians cannot entertain thoughts of evil, because only Christian thoughts are derived from God, who knows no evil. If professed Christians entertain thoughts of evil and hate, and voice unkind utterances toward others, they are not thinking God's thoughts; they are admitting the presence and power of more than one God or intelligence, thereby forfeiting their right to be called Christians.
Christian Science is the Christianity taught and practised by Jesus of Nazareth two thousand years ago and established in this age through the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. This is the Christianity which was attacked in a recent sermon in a building dedicated to the cause of "on earth peace, good will toward men"!
The world will some day admit that Christianity is a thing of the heart as well as of the head. It will see that he is the best Christian who understands God, Spirit, to be the Father of all, and who does the most good in the world, irrespective of creed or dogma. Jesus did not point out that true discipleship would be measured by the tenacity of one's belief about his teachings, but by one's ability to put these teachings into practice, Hear these words: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;" and again, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."
