The gratitude and encouragement which fill my heart...
The gratitude and encouragement which fill my heart whenever I read some of the loving testimonies published in the Christian Science periodicals make me long to swell their pæans of praise. On Feb. 7, 1909, I went into a rest-cure with little or no hope in my heart, or in the thought of my physicians, that I would come out for many months. I had tried all kinds of doctors and specialists, but a long continued nervous breakdown had finally resulted in extreme exhaustion with some serious complications, including a severe intestinal trouble. A friend asked me why I did not try Christian Science, and I sent for a practitioner. I had absolutely no understanding and no belief whatever in Christian Science, but, as Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 13), "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals," and I was healed instantaneously of all the diseased conditions. A sense of fatigue remained for some weeks, and I was obliged to begin the study of Christian Science and to learn for myself what had healed me.
I had given up all belief in God; in fact, when the practitioner referred to God I requested her not to mention that name to me, for I did not believe in Him. Then she asked me if I believed in love; and upon being assured that I did, she gently told me that God is Love. That dissipated in my thought the old belief in a God who sends evil as well as good. The revelation which came in that one treatment has never left me, and whenever I have turned to God and loved more, all discordant conditions have disappeared. Two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time, and where God—Love—is, there is no room for evil of any kind.
My gratitude for Christian Science is overflowing, and my prayer is that I may give and love more.
