Seven years ago, while living in Portland, Ore., I was suffering great pain from an organic disorder which medical treatment had not been able to alleviate, and my husband urged me to try Christian Science, as he had himself been having this help for about a week with favorable results. As he was a Gentile I thought it might be all right for him; but I myself was a Jewess.
On the anniversary of the Jewish new year I was unusually ill, and as "man's extremity is God's opportunity" I reluctantly consented to call on a Christian Science practitioner. To reach her home I had to pass the synagogue, and for the first time in my life I walked past the door, not in. When I reached the practitioner my heart was heavy, for I felt I was about to tear out of it that which was most sacred to me. The practitioner was very patient and kind; but when she handed me the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I rejected it; I simply could not read about Christ Jesus. Then she said, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord." I told her that was "ours." She merely smiled and remarked that we would prove it true. How those words burned in me,—that she, a Gentile, would prove this sacred saying; and she did. I was healed in three treatments and there has never been the slightest return of the ailment. Since then we have proven many times the truth of the inspired declaration, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord."
Gratefully I admitted that Christian Science had healed me, and I wanted to know how. I read Science and Health assiduously, but every time I came to the words "Jesus" and "Christ," I looked over them. Then I substituted "God," until my growing understanding made me admit that the author knew the proper word to express her idea. My next step was to use a dictionary, and I found the definition of "Christ" to be the "Messiah," and of "Jesus" to be "the son of Mary." Then with the aid of the Concordance to Science and Health, I studied every reference to "Jesus" and "Christ," and in fulfilment of our dear Leader's statement that "desire is prayer" (Science and Health, p. 1), the truth of this revelation was unfolded to me.
