The Voice from Heaven

In the book of Revelation we are told that John heard "a great voice out of heaven" declaring the ever-presence and unbroken harmony of God's kingdom. To many Christian people this divine utterance means a past event, something which the apostle heard while in Patmos, and which dealt with conditions to be realized in the far future if on this side of the grave; but not so is it understood in Christian Science. Those who accept this teaching are convinced that God is speaking to men all the time; the only question is how many hear and heed the divine utterance. Throughout the Scriptures we are told of many who heard the voice of God and were guided thereby. Respecting this Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 308), "The Soul-inspired patriarchs heard the voice of Truth, and talked with God as consciously as man talks with man;" and in one of our dearly loved hymns by her (Hymnal, p. 237) are these lines:—

I will listen for Thy voice,
Lest my footsteps stray.
