It is with deep gratitude that I speak of the benefits which have come to me through Christian Science. My attention was drawn to it seven years ago by a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which was sent to me from the church loan library by a friend. At this time I seemed almost overcome with grief and unspeakable anguish, also with fast failing health. The latter did not seem so pronounced, however, owing to the greater mental suffering. A few years previous to this we had met with financial reverses and had almost constnat illness in the home. I had long since tried all that relatives and loving friends could recommend, but to no avail; and matters grew steadily worse, until each day was welcomed simply because it meant one day nearer the end. What this would be I cared little, just so it might at least bring freedom from torture.
I had been taught that God sent all, both good and bad, and that He sent these conditions for some wise purpose. At this time, not feeling that I could thank Him and mean it, I ceased to pray. The reading of the Bible left me more or less confused, so I gave that up also. The day came when things were even worse. As far back as I can remember I had secretly longed to know and understand God, and at this time I did so earnestly desire to be led to know the proper step to take, for it seemed necessary to make a change. Suddenly a feeling of peace came to me and a desire for sleep, which I had not had for a long time. I awoke refreshed, and still the rest and peace remained.
The following morning's mail brought the copy of Science and Health. I could scarcely believe my eyes as I read the definition of God (p. 587), and that He was not the author of anything unlike good. Then turning to the Preface I read (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings." Right then and there hope sprang up, such as I had never known before, and it seemed that life was just beginning. I clung to this book and read it constantly, for I felt that it contained just what I had longed to know. As a result, my health improved steadily from the first. I was able to lay aside glasses which I had worn constantly for twenty-three years, and have never worn them since or felt the need of them. Furthermore, the pain has left my eyes. I am grateful for this blessing.
