It is with thankfulness to God that I write this testimony...
It is with thankfulness to God that I write this testimony as to what Christian Science has done for me. I am now nearly seventy-two years old, and for many years I had been a great sufferer from what the doctors called neuralgia, supposedly brought on by exposure while a soldier in the civil war, and for which I tried a good many doctors and remedies. For the last fifteen years or more I had suffered severe pains, so that I got scarcely any sleep, and that only by taking drugs. The doctors advised whisky, and by constant use of it I got to drinking heavily and thought I could not do without it.
I continued to grow worse all the time, and my heart was affected so that I would be unconscious for two or three hours at a time. I was finally advised to go to the Old Soldiers' Sanitarium in South Dakota, at Battle Mountain. I was hardly able to get there, but I went. I however got worse and nearly passed on. The doctors and nurses said that as I had a weak heart I could not live up there long, for the altitude was too high, and that if I wanted to see my family again I had better go home right away. They told me that I could not go alone, so I paid a comrade to accompany me, and it took two men to get me into the house when I arrived there. That was in November, 1914. I only stayed there eight days, and I suffered so much all the time that I prayed to die in order to get out of my trouble.
Some time in February, 1915, a kind Christian Science neighbor sent me a Sentinel and a Journal, and then loaned me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I commenced to read and study, and it was not long before the light began to shine through the darkness. When I thought about my pains I did not have any. I threw the material remedies away, and also discarded the whisky. I discovered I could get along without either, and I now have no desire for them. I also found that God is an ever present help in time of trouble. The pains came back in about a week, but I kept on reading and studying Science and Health and they left me. Now I do not have any trouble but what I can overcome by reading the book and praying to the Father for help. I am so thankful for the spiritual uplift it has given me, and also for the works that our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has left us.—George W. Blevins, Surprise, Neb.
