The Lectures
A large and interested audience heard Virgil O. Strickler expounded the doctrines of Christian Science at the Lyceum Theater. As this was the first Christian Science lecture ever given in Shanghai, the theater was well filled. In the audience were many prominent church people, followers of other faiths. The lecturer was introduced by W. Adams Oram, who said:—
Although comparatively new to Shanghai, Christian Science has now been before the world for nearly fifty years, having been discovered by Mrs. Eddy in 1866. Like all new religious movements, it has often been and still is the subject of adverse criticism and misrepresentation, but being founded on the rock of ages, it has safely weathered every storm that has raged around it, and is today established more firmly than ever. Its adherents are numbered by hundreds of thousands, and are to be found in almost every country of the world and in many different walks of life; and to those who have earnestly studied its teachings and faithfully adhered to its rules, it has invariably brought health and happiness, and an understanding of the true meaning of Christ Jesus' words, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
It was for the purpose of presenting Christian Science in its true colors, and in such a manner that it could not be misunderstood, that these lectures were instituted by Mrs. Eddy. They are given wherever a Christian Science church or society is established, and many who have attended them, suffering from physical infirmities or mental worries, have found relief and peace, and have had reason to thank God that the days of so-called miracles are not past.
