From childhood I had sought God, even studying for two years in a Bible training school, as I wished to become a foreign missionary; but nowhere in Christian teaching could I find a concept of God that satisfied me. Moreover, I was a mental and physical wreck, "having no hope, and without God in the world." Good but misguided people had taught me that Christian Science is the anti-Christ, and because they were sincere people I believed them.
When a sister told me that she was studying Christian Science, I said, "Let it alone; it is of the devil," and she did let it alone. I vehemently repeated the same thing to a friend only a few days before turning to Science, after having exhausted all other means. On my way to see the practitioner, I thought of what Gamaliel said to Paul, "If this . . . work be of men, it will come to naught: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it." I told the practitioner that I would accept nothing but what the Bible told me was true, and she replied that she did not wish me to do so. Never once did she try to proselyte, but she did give me some of the literature to read. How grateful I am now for the loving spirit with which she guided me out of Egypt!
To me God is no longer a tyrant, but a God who is Love, I no longer tremble when I say "Thy will be done," but rejoice because I know His ways are pleasantness and His paths are peace. Since the truth came to me I am a new creature, and my desire is to labor in Love's vineyard. I have had physical healings, one of strained and infected eyes, and financial problems have also been overcome, but there is nothing for which I am so grateful as for the renewing of my mind. I am thankful for our Christian Science literature, for often when working out a problem some article proves itself God's messenger, bringing to me His thoughts, which always carry victory with them.
