"One grand brotherhood"
Reading the very many expressions of gratitude that have come from those whose necessities have been met in a measure through the war relief fund subscribed by Christian Scientists in the United States, one can but look upon this endeavor as an exemplification of the teaching found on page 518 of Science and Health: "The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother's need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another's good." To those who have already contributed to this fund and to those purposing further contributions, the few typical extracts given below will bring assurance that the aid thus extended blesses "him that gives and him that takes."
"I hardly know how to begin my letter, my heart is so full of grateful thanks to your church for the loving help—I cannot call it anything else. Perhaps you can guess how especially grateful we feel, because we tried so hard to endure quietly. I already take a deep interest in your church and shall now take a deeper—it has certainly proved to me that 'God is Love.' Will you convey to the givers our grateful thanks? Tell them the kind way in which it has been sent makes us feel it is a gift sent by God through them. We don't feel a bit as though it were charity, in the cold sense of the word."
"I felt I could not rightly express my gratitude yesterday, whom you handed me a check. That my difficulties should have been overcome in such a practical manner seems just marvelous, and the Christlike love that must be at the back of all this has given me such peace and a realization of the Father's tender care. Words in no way express what I feel at the lifting of a great burden. I trust that some day I shall have progressed enough in this great truth to make myself useful to others."
