That Christian Science is indeed founded on the Scriptures...

Carbondale (Pa.) Leader

That Christian Science is indeed founded on the Scriptures may be clearly understood from the very first tenet of that faith, which reads : "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Science and Health, p. 497). The book just named is the text-book of Christian Science, and its author, Mrs. Eddy, appropriately denominated a portion of its title as a "Key to the Scriptures," for many thousands of earnest men and women in this and other lands have found that this key has unlocked for them new stores for truth in the Bible, through the understanding of which there has been brought into their lives more of happiness, health, and spirituality than they had experienced before.

How any one who has "studied very minutely Christian Science in relation to the Scriptures" could reach a conclusion that it is "unscriptural," is difficult to see in view of the universal testimony of Christian Scientists that they use the Bible to a far greater extent than before their connection with the Christian Science church, and that the message of the Scriptures is better understood and is more practical for meeting the every-day problems of life than previously. The fact is that Christian Scientists are constant students of the Bible, for in it they must find that truth upon which they depend for preservation from sin, sickness, and misfortune. Neither are Christian Scientists the prevaricators in regard to a sense of pain that critics make out, for they turn to Christian Science for relief from suffering. They do not, however, regard sin, sickness, and death as eternal facts of being or creations of God, for such a belief brings only hopelessness and misery to mortals.

Our critic is also perturbed because in his opinion Christian Scientists do not "go out into the highways and byways to seek the lost and strayed." If Christian Science is what the critic has painted, instead of bemoaning such a condition, did is exist, he aught to rejoice that those of the highways and byways have been spared the attentions of Christian Science. As a matter of actual fact, the membership of Christian Science churches includes high and low, rich and poor, persons who come from all walks of life.
