"Stand therefore"
Nothing is more discreditable to Christian profession than the disposition to dodge a duty. It plants the seed of moral cowardice and dates the beginning of degeneracy. To try to run away from duty is always unheroic and debasing, and they who would overcome the temptation do well to be very much awake to its subtleties. The "easier path" constantly invites one to leave the ascending and ofttimes stony right way. We often start out well, even run up-hill a little way, "to meet the rising sun," and then, as Mrs. Browning so finely says,—
We are apt to sit tired, patient as a fool While others grid us with the violent bands Of social figments, feints and formalisms, Reversing our straight nature, lifting up Our base needs, keeping down our lofty thoughts, Head downward on the cross sticks of the world,
