At the time I turned to Christian Science no part of my anatomy was in a normal condition. I had never known what it was to feel strong or well, and increasing years seemed only to bring added physical distress. When I was a young girl, tubercular trouble developed, and as rapidly as one condition was overcome another claimed attention. Three times I had been upon the operating table and submitted to what is known in medical circles as major operations. On the last of these occasions, about two and a half years ago, three distinct operations were performed by one of the most skilful surgeons in Philadelphia, which had been my home for twenty years.
After this experience it would seem impossible that any one whose hold upon life was so frail could live, but to my sorrow I did. After spending fourteen weeks in the hospital, I went to a suburban town and struggled through several months of convalescence, returning at intervals of ten days for medical treatment, which produced intense suffering but failed to bring permanent relief. About this time I decided to resume my duties, only to collapse completely and return to the hospital within a month. As soon as able to do so I started for Dexter, Mich., where my parents reside.
There is no doubt in my mind that the condition was of a malignant type. I suffered intensely, was greatly emaciated, almost helpless; in fact I was in a truly pitiful state. Later I consulted another surgeon with no satisfactory results, but was finally led to visit a Christian Science practitioner, and with four treatments I was completely healed. It is impossible to describe the relief which the first visit to the practitioner brought me. A great weight seemed lifted, and for the first time in many years I realized that it was a joy to live. The following morning I burned an elaborate jacket or belt which I had been wearing; in fact since the hospital days I had never held an upright position without it, and was told that I must wear it until it was worn out, and even then might have to replace it with a new one. There was no uncertainty in my mind as to the result, when I destroyed it and threw away everything in the line of medicine and medical appliances which I possessed. From that day to this no drugs of any kind have passed my lips.
