On June 10, 1912, my little boy, then eight years old, fell from the nursery window three stories high, a distance of about thirty feet. I was away from home at the time, and when I returned he had been taken to a hospital, where it was found that he had sustained what was pronounced a double compound fracture of both thighs, the bones protruding through his clothing. The collar-bone also was broken.
The boy had Christian Science treatment from the first, and when I saw him at the hospital a short time after the bones had been set, he said he had no pain. He was crying, however, and when I asked him why he was doing that if he had no pain, he said that he wanted to go home and have Christian Science treatment. I explained to him that he was having Science treatment, and that God was in the hospital just the same as at home. He then became calm and told me how the accident occurred, and was quite cheerful. I was with him for six hours daily for six weeks, and during that time never again saw a look of suffering on his face. At the end of this period I took him home, and he stood alone that night for a few seconds. The doctors said he would have to go on crutches for weeks, but he never did so at all. At first he walked by holding to the table, then with the aid of a stick, and he went back to school the first day of the term, early in September, perfectly well, without a limp or any sort of stiffness. He was able to take up his gymnasium work and play foot-ball just as if nothing had happened, and he has not missed an hour from school since.
I am most grateful for this wonderful healing, and for the help Christian Science was to me during this time. It enabled me to be quite calm when I heard of the accident, and to interview the doctors and the matron at the hospital. The matron said she did not think I realized the dreadful thing that had happened, and she was right—I only realized that God is the one power and presence, and that evil has no power.
