[Written for the Sentinel]

Harmony

Oh, for a broader love, that clasps a while
Both friend and seeming enemy in one embrace;
That sees the true reflection of God's smile
'Neath earth's cold frown in every brother's face!

Oh, for a deeper hope, whose anchors lie
Not on the shallow ground or shifting sand,
That, passing fortune's fickle favors by,
Leaves all within the hollow of His hand!

Oh, for a purer faith, that steadfast stands
'Mid mortal threats and life-long honored fears;
That holds the lamp of life, though death commands
Obeisance to its will of grief and tears!

Oh, for a slower tongue when tumults swell
Within the breast for blame unmerited,
When one short word of silent prayer might quell
The troubled tide with peace inherited!

Oh, for a greater kindness as we flee
O'er stone and thorn-bush in life's comfort quest,
When faltering ones less surely shod than we
Seek, by thy sighs perchance, more needed rest!

Oh, for a brighter life, a longer day,
A holier, grander sense of something done!
Tis our own nightfall when we turn away
And lose the brilliancy of God's full sun.

Ours be the tranquil eve, the fearless night,
The dawn that breaks in white-robed purity,
When on the tablet of our waking thought
God leaves His angel-touch of harmony!
