Siid-California Deutsche Zeitung
No thinking person can deny that the greatest religious question of the day is Christian Science. It is represented in every large as well as every small city from Alaska to the Cape of Good Hope, and from the Netherlands to Australia. As we can see from the large attendance at the Christian Science churches, this religion must, after all, have something extraordinary that attracts the public, and be something different from other religions. As a means of healing for the sick and also of overcoming sin, it has to bear much criticism from physicians and churches. Truth, nevertheless, scatters all criticism of those who do not understand Christian Science and do not know how to practise it. We are not supporters of Christian Science, but we love honesty.
Christian Science brings a new and clear conception of God. It sets forth that God does not punish, but that He is goodness itself, and always present with us. He created man perfect, without sickness or sin, and it rests with mankind to keep off sickness and sin by obeying God's commandments and doing only good. This idea surely is new, and a contradiction of the old theology, whereby God takes man's life or sends sickness and disease. The Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, wrote a book entitled "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which has a very large circulation. It is translated into German to aid the growth of Christian Science among the Germans. Mrs. Eddy passed away some time since, and is mourned more generally perhaps than any other woman of history.
