In March, 1913, I was taken with a sudden and to mortal...

In March, 1913, I was taken with a sudden and to mortal sense critical illness, which might easily have terminated fatally, according to the beliefs held previous to my acquaintance with Christian Science. At the time of this illness I had been a student of Christian Science for five and a half years, having first become interested through the benefits derived from it by my daughter, who was the only surviving member of my family besides myself. As I had liberally overlapped the "threescore years and ten," the presumption, according to average mortal thought, was largely adverse to a successful combat with such a sickness.

Being an ardent Christian Scientist, I had no medical diagnosis, but the discord appeared to be a sort of acute asthmatic bronchitis, which made it impossible for me to breathe in any other than an upright position, and even then with the greatest difficulty. One phase of the experience was that my right hand, with which I am now writing, became entirely useless. There was no sensation whatever in it, and on attempting its use, it crumpled up like a withered leaf.

One night, physical life appeared to be hanging by a thread. I was propped up near the fire, while my daughter read continuously to me from Science and Health for three hours, from twelve midnight until three in the morning, and life returned. The next day my hand began to feel normal again. The Christian Science practitioner who had helped us at other times was absent during my illness, but we got in telephonic communication with her and her treatment was prompt and effective, for it resulted in restoring to my consciousness God's gracious healing of all the discordant conditions, and brought about a resumption of normal health within a week from the time of my first attack. I have since continued to have robust health and vigor.
