The Rev. Mr.—seems to consider that he is holding a...
Herts Advertiser and St. Albans Times
The Rev. Mr.—seems to consider that he is holding a strong position in his attitude toward Christian Science, whereas the mere fact of his having classified it as fundamentally unscriptural and antichristian, reveals such a lack of knowledge of the subject as to render his position untenable. When he understands Christian Science sufficiently to enable him to prove its teaching by demonstration, as thousands are doing today, he will then be in a position to offer a statement concerning it.
The first tenet of Christian Science, given on page 497 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," reads as follows: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life;" and again on page 319 Mrs. Eddy writes: "The divine Science taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs inspiration to be understood." When our Master commanded his followers to do the works which he did, I presume our critic will acknowledge that Jesus intended them to use the same spiritual means he employed. Has humanity found a better way of healing than that of Jesus, who was never known to fail in a single case he undertook, whether it was the healing of the sick or the raising of the dead? The world has got to acknowledge Christ as the way sooner or later, and the sooner the better. Every conceivable material way or means has been tried by suffering humanity since the days of Adam to get rid of its disease and suffering, and been found wanting. Down through the centuries of Old Testament history we have examples of the healing of sin and sickness, the raising of the dead, the multiplying of oil and meal, which involved exactly the same demonstration of divine Principle as in the similar works of our Lord centuries later.
Christ Jesus in his simple though profound statement, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," virtually said that freedom from every human discord lay in the knowing of the truth, not in the taking or applying of anything material. In Christian Science Mrs. Eddy rediscovered the divine Principle by which he performed his mighty works. He declared that any one who believed on him (understood his teaching) would be able to do the works that he did, and it is just in proportion to his having the Mind which was in Christ Jesus that a man can perform the same works today.
