The Lectures

Memphis, Tenn.

George Shaw Cook delivered two lectures on Christian Science in the church edifice. C. C. Ogilvie, superintendent of the Goodwyn Institute, introduced the lecturer the first evening, saying in part:—

I am not a member of the Christian Science church, but I have always been much impressed with the splendid optimism of its followers, with their tolerant, charitable spirit under attack, and with their absolute confidence in and unreserved reliance upon the principles of philosophy, healing, and religion taught by Christian Science.

At the second lecture Atty. A. Y. Scott in his introduction said in part:—

The latter half of the last century produced many remarkable characters. Among these was one who declared a spiritual truth, and prescribed a spiritual remedy for all ills. In 1875 Mrs. Eddy published her great work, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She affirmed an infinite God, the Father, creator of all that was and is and shall be, and with sublime intellectual courage followed this premise to its logical conclusion. She dared to accept literally these words of Jesus, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do;" also his commands to "preach the gospel" and "heal the sick." Whether we agree with her or not, we must recognize the incontrovertible fact that she has builded a religion; for hundreds of thousands she has made the waste places to blossom; into the darkened, sin-bound soul she has brought the sunshine of hope and joy. To thousands racked with disease and pain she has given health and peace, and for them a faith that was dead has revived. She has given the world a new religion, based upon love and not upon fear; a religion which makes of this earth, to them that believe, a heaven now and for all eternity. Can we marvel that these thousands regard their Leader with reverence and deep affection?—Correspondence.

A large and representative audience listened to a lecture on Christian Science by Jacob S. Shield, given in Mohammed Temple under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist. The lecturer was intorduced by W. J. Leach of The Peoria Journal, who, after quoting the parable of the sower, said in part:—

I am persuaded that no class of religious teachers has ever more perfectly conceived the pedagogic truth which lies behind this parable, than have the Christian Scientists. Calmly, dispassionately, they set forth what truth they have learned, troubling themselves not at all about the reception of it. More than any other class of teachers, they seem willing to leave the truth to win its own way, once they have told what they know of it. All classes of soil mentioned in the story of Jesus are represented in this audience. The lecturer is concerned only with the seed. When he shall have brought the word to us, it is not his to worry as to what will become of his message.—The Peoria Journal.

Willis F. Gross, who lectured on Christian Science, was introduced by Lieut. W. C. Jacobs of West Point, who said in part:—

Nearly fifty years ago Christian Science was first presented to the world by Mrs. Eddy. For centuries mankind had been struggling toward the light, but was held in check by the accumulated dogmas and theories of materialism. In itself, Christian Science was not a new religion, as it was the rebirth of the truths taught by Jesus Christ; but these spiritual truths had been hidden under a covering of material errors, until their practical application had been lost sight of. However, what is really true is always true, and today the spiritual methods used by Jesus to destroy sin, disease, and death, are being applied by the followers of Mrs. Eddy to accomplishe the same results as those obtained by the followers of our Lord. Thousands of unimpeachable testimonies prove that Christian Science, honestly and intelligently applied, does refute material theories as to sin, disease, and death, and in their stead brings health and happiness, and a spiritual freedom that surpasses all material comprehension.

A lecture on Christian Science by William D. McCrackan, M.A., was given at the high school auditorium to an audience of about three hundred people. Introductory remarks were made by William B. Connor, first reader, who said:—

In the most memorable sermon that was ever preached, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." In speaking of Christian Science, its Discoverer, Mrs. Eddy, says on page 271 of Science and Health, "The Sermon on the Mount is the essence of this Science, and the eternal life, not the death of Jesus, is its outcome." As followers of Jesus the Christ, Christian Scientists are endeavoring to put into daily practice the lessons which he taught in this wonderful sermon. Through the study of this and other Scripture in the light of Christian Science, they have been healed, some of sickness and some of sin; some have had harmony restored where once discord reigned, and they all know God better than they ever knew Him before. They feel that the greatest good which has ever come into their lives is the understanding they have gained through this Science, and that in helping others to understand something of it they are putting into practice the golden rule of doing unto others as they would have others do to them.—Correspondence.

Jacob S. Shield, who was announced to lecture on Christian Science for Sixteenth Church, at the Armstrong school, received a welcome that exceeded expectations. The chairs which at first had been provided, about eight hundred, proved entirely inadequate to meet the demand, and additional ones had to be secured. It is thought there were between ten and twelve hundred people present. The speaker was introduced by Frank C. Rogers, who said in part:—

To one and all who are ready to accept the Christ-principle, it comes as it did to Saul of Tarsus, as a revelation, as the voice of God speaking to the human consciousness. When the great light of Truth came to Saul on the road to Damascus, it caused a complete transformation in his thought, and the proud and pitiless Saul became the compassionate and loving Paul, endowed with a spiritual understanding of the Christ which enabled him to heal the sick and raise the dead.

Today Christian Science is revealing to mankind this same light of Truth, and is proving that the promises of the Bible may be made practical here and now in better lives and healthier bodies. There are probably many within the territory served by this church who are seeking surcease from sin and sickness, and longing for an understanding of the Christ, Truth, which this religion gives, but who hesitate to investigate because of having been misinformed concerning its teachings. This lecture is for the purpose of correcting misrepresentations and to give authentic information about Christian Science.—North Shore News.

Helena, Mont.

Bicknell Young lectured on Christian Science at the Unitarian church. He was introduced by L. E. Rudd, first reader, who said:—

Nearly two thousand years ago there was born into this world one who has since been called (Science and Health, p. 52) "the best man that ever trod the globe,"—Jesus the Christ. His mission was to demonstrate the power of God and to show us by example how most surely to gain the kingdom of heaven, but his teachings as given to us in the Bible have not always been heeded. Take, for example, his direct commands: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel;" "Heal the sick." Many have been willing to obey the first of these, but others have felt that the latter was intended only for a select few, his immediate disciples. Mrs. Eddy awoke to the realization that the commands of Jesus were intended for us all, as much so today as during the time of his ministry, and after years of struggle and self-denial she gave to the world that wonderful text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." It has been our guide to a better and clearer understanding of Jesus' promises, and is enabling those who are willing to study it in connection with the Bible, to prove by actual demonstration that God is Love, and therefore is not responsible for the dire calamities so commonly attributed to Him.

Glendale, Cal.

The high school auditorium was filled to its capacity when Prof. Hermann S. Hering lectured on Christian Science. He was introduced by Atty. Frederick Baker, who said in part:—

Christian Science offers a solution of the vital problems of life based upon a spiritual interpretation of the Bible. It is a restatement in modern terms of the truth taught by Jesus, for he instructed his followers how to overcome sin, sickness, and death, and proved the truth of his words by his mighty works. In the same way Christian Science teaches the laws of life, health, and happiness, and thousands upon thousands are today demonstrating the truth of this teaching.
