[Written for the Sentinel]

Alone with God

Alone with God!
Wrapped in the solitude of peace,
There comes a sense of sweet release
From dark despair.
I mount the altar-stairs of life,
My spirit with new impulse rife
To do and dare.

Alone with God!
I seem to roam in pastures green,
Where all is quiet and serene,
Where rivers run
Complacently to meet the sea,
And babbling brooks greet joyously
The rising sun.

Alone with God!
With every other thought shut out,
Without a fear, without a doubt,
I lay my head
Upon the loving Father's breast,
And there no football stirs my rest
Save angels' tread.

Alone with God!
I have no need of sun or moon
Or stars to keep my heart in tune,
When I abide
Within the sunshine of His love,
And know all good gifts from above
Will be supplied.
