The Lectures

The introductory words of LeNoir White at the lecture on Christian Science by Virgil O. Strickler, who spoke under the auspices of twelve Chicago churches, were as follows:—

This large audience is possible here today because of the faith and obedience, the words and works, of one noble, courageous woman, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. That works follow her words, many of you are witnesses. It has always been God's purpose that all mankind should know Him. David said, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, Pref., p. xi), "When God called the author to proclaim His gospel to this age, there came also the charge to plant and water His vineyard." Her obedience to the charge given her was very wonderful, for she not only wrote and published the message itself, as found in the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," but she provided ways and methods whereby mankind might receive the message. She founded The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., whose branches are now located all over the world. She furnished the order of service for these churches, ordained the Bible and the Christian Science text-book as the pastor therein, and made provision for the Lesson-Sermons, which are read from these books to the congregations every Sunday. She instituted the Wednesday evening meetings, where grateful people testify of Christian Science Mind-healing, and established Sunday schools, where the children and youth are taught the Scriptures, and whereby they learn how to exemplify the teachings of Jesus.

Mrs. Eddy founded the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, and later a board of education of The Mother Church, providing teaching and teachers, with the result that now there are practitioners everywhere, ministering to the sick and helping the sinner to reform. She founded a publishing society, making provision for publishing and distributing Christian Science literature and periodicals, and later a great international daily newspaper, devoted to clean journalism. Thus did she plant and water, and all the world today is a witness that through these avenues God has given a mighty increase. She also established a board of lectureship of The Mother Church, whose members are instructed so to present the subject of Christian Science to the people as to remove prejudice and misconception and prepare the way for the message which blesses all who receive it. Thus we see that because of the eternal purpose of divine Love, and because of the obedience of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, we are here this afternoon to enjoy the God-given privilege of listening to a lecture on Christian Science.—Correspondence.
