About six years ago a newspaper man who was stopping...
About six years ago a newspaper man who was stopping at our house told us one evening of the case of a business man who had been healed by Christian Science of total deafness. I was interested enough to want to know how Christian Science could accomplish this healing, and remembering that I had seen the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in the library to which I belonged, I determined to get the book and read it. I read part of it, some of which I understood, but a great deal was like Greek to me. I did not grasp at all what was meant by the unreality of matter, so after a short time I returned the book, feeling I could not understand Christian Science.
Before and during this time I was constantly under medical treatment for severe stomach trouble, nervousness, headaches, and another ailment for which I had to take a certain medicine each day. I also had a very bad structural defect of the eye; in fact, the last oculist I consulted said I had one of the worst cases he had ever seen. For the next few years I tried many things in search of the health I longed for, one of which seemed to help me while I was having treatment; but as soon as I stopped, old conditions returned. During these years I read many metaphysical works, for I was looking for a better understanding of God as well as for health.
In the autumn of 1909 we decided to give up housekeeping and live in New York. This necessitated sending our dog to the country. He was there less than a week when his back was so badly injured that he lost the power of his hind legs and suffered dreadfully at times. My husband had several veterinary surgeons examine him, but they could not relieve his sufferings and advised my husband to have the dog killed. This I refused to have done. Finally, one of my neighbors who had recently become interested in Christian Science, advised me to take the dog to a practitioner for treatment at once. I did so, much against the wishes of my husband, who thought it was foolish to expect Christian Science to cure a broken back that the surgeons could not even help. My dog was healed, however, in a short time, and is today healthy and as playful as a pup, though nearly eleven years old.
