The Lectures

In introducing Virgil O. Strickler, who lectured on Christian Science, H. H. McMurtrie said:—

At the present time the professed followers of Jesus Christ are divided into several hundred different sects or denominations. This division is doubtless mainly caused by difference of doctrinal beliefs, that have resulted from as many different interpretations of the Bible. It certainly would seem to be plain that if all men understood that Bible alike, there would be but one flock, in one fold, with one shepherd.

The Christian Science church is, so far as I know, the youngest of all Christian denominations. Its history began some forty years ago, when there was but one Christian Scientist in the world. That one was Mrs. Eddy, a noble-minded Christian woman who was gifted with spiritual intuition far in advance of her day and generation. She stood on the mountain of truth, uplifted by her holy faith higher above the clouds and mists of material belief than any other man or woman of her time. She placed her thought in book form, called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"; and this book has done more to upbuild God's kingdom here on earth than any other human agency of modern times.
