About twenty years ago I was taken with a very severe...
About twenty years ago I was taken with a very severe pain in my left side, and I decided to place myself under the care of a physician, who doctored me for several months; but I grew worse, and my heart became so weak at times that I was afraid to go out alone. I then decided to change physicians, but received no benefit, and after trying about a dozen, my stomach became so bad that it would not digest anything; even water disagreed with me, and very often I would have to sit up for hours at night. One physician said there was nothing the matter with my heart, but that my nerves were all unstrung, so I decided to put myself under the care of a nerve specialist. After taking his treatment for four months without being helped, I became discouraged and refused to take any more medicine. At times I felt as if I might die at any moment, and noticing that a little whisky seemed to help me in my misery, I decided to take some every time I felt bad.
This went on for nine or ten years, when I came to the conclusion that the whisky was hurting me more than all my other troubles combined, so I resolved to quit drinking. I tried more than a dozen times to do so, but could not keep from the drink for more than three days at a time, as I became so nervous. Meantime I was using a great deal of tobacco, and it seemed as if I needed to have whisky and tobacco to live. As I really wished to quit drinking, I placed myself under the care of an alcohol specialist, but his treatment resulted in no benefit. Then I took tobacco treatment, from which I likewise received no benefit. Then I took treatment, from which I likewise received no benefit. But, thank God, I was at last led to Christian Science. A week after I became interested in it, I lost all desire for liquor, and about a month later, in coming from a Wednesday evening meeting, I found my taste for tobacco beginning to leave me, and I gradually lost all desire for the weed. My health is now good; I can eat anything I want, at any time, and sleep all night without discomfort.
For all this I feel as if I can never give enough thanks to God, and I am truly grateful to Mrs. Eddy for the blessings I have received in Christian Science.
