British Congregationalist
One of your contributors asks what is the secret of the attraction of Christian Science. The secret is exceedingly simple. It is the fact that it brings to humanity "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding." Many people superficially attribute the success of Christian Science to the healing of physical disease. Such reasoning is extraordinarily shallow. Physical healing no doubt draws the attention of people to Christian Science today, just as it did to the teaching of Jesus almost two thousand years ago. That, however, would not hold them after they had been healed. What holds them is the perception which comes to them in healing, of the power, through a realization of the omnipotence of God, to achieve harmony in their lives.
If, as Christian Science insists, sickness and disease are subjective conditions of the human mind, then the understanding of divine Principle, which restores the harmony of thought and so destroys the pain and inharmony of disease, is just as powerful to destroy sorrow and want and woe. In plain English, sickness, like sorrow and want, is the result of the inharmony of believing in some power stronger than that of God, good. The healing of disease, which shows that there is no such power, indicates that every other phase of inharmony may be destroyed in the same way. This is surely why Jesus said, "Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?"
