It would have been better for Evangelist Brown and his audience if he had preached the gospel instead of lecturing against Christian Science. Not that his mistaken ideas could harm Christian Science any, for these attacks usually arouse an interest in the subject, and lead people to investigate for themselves. And as our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, is to be found in nearly all of the public libraries, any honest seeker for truth can easily inform himself on this important subject. It is still true, as it was in the early Christian era, that the truth thrives in spite of persecution.

The Bible states, "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself." Christian Science is a return to primitive Christianity, and does not rest upon human opinions; but each one may prove the truth for himself, "with signs following." The great Founder of the Christian religion, Christ Jesus, taught his followers to preach the gospel and heal the sick, which is just what Christian Scientists are doing; and this accounts for the wonderful growth of Christian Science.

The world is tired of preaching without practise. Science and Health states, on page 201: "The best sermon ever preached in Truth practised and demonstrated by the destruction of sin, sickness, and death." If our critic had looked in Webster's dictionary, he would have learned that "evangelist" means "a bringer of the gospel." Gamaliel's advice is still applicable: "Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to naught: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight aginst God." The gentleman says that Christian Science teaches that Christ Jesus did not come in the flesh; but we read in Science and Health, "Born of a woman, Jesus' advent in the flesh partook partly of Mary's earthly condition, although he was endowed with the Christ, the divine Spirit, without measure" (p. 30).
