[Written for the Sentinel.]

ENVISIONED

Have you seen the vision? he questioned while at play,
And his mates in maddest merriment deserted him straightway,
But an elder one returning stroked his silky hair
And whispered, I have seen it, dear, and oh, 'twas wondrous fair!

Have you seen the vision? he queried still at school.
The rougher boys avoiding him surnamed him folly's fool.
But a lad of gentle lineage in secret came by night
And said, I've seen the vision and it blessed with peace and might.

Have you seen the vision? through his busy life he asked,
All undaunted by the scornful smile and insult thinly masked.
And here and there he met a friend with lofty purpose thrilled
Who had seen the royal vision and whose voice would not be stilled.
