I wish to tell how I came to realize the truth of Christian Science, and how much it has helped me in every way since. I had never been a religious man and seldom attended church. I always held that all a man could do was to try and play the game of mortal existence straight, and I had not found that church-going helped me to do this.

Over two years ago, however, when on leave in England, I met a most extraordinary case, as I then thought, of healing through Christian Science. I will not go into any details concerning this case, but will only say that a very dear friend was suddenly cured by it against the expressed opinion of the doctors. I had known all details of the case beforehand, and when my friend learned a little of the benefits of Christian Science, she naturally wished me to learn them too. I had always jeered at this Science, having an entirely wrong opinion as to what it really was; but I promised to read the text-book and see what I thought of it. As I believe often happens, I discovered many statements which seemed to me illogical, but being prevailed upon to take these questions to a practitioner, they were explained to me so logically that I could not refute her explanations. This made me realize that Christian Science was not a religion to be laughed at and cast aside; so I started to work at it, and in the end I realized its truth and beauty.

Since then I have taken no drugs, although some few months ago, when there was cholera in the cantonments, I had an attack of illness which appeared to be of that nature. By reading Science and Health, however, and treating myself, I was able to do duty again on the third morning, although I felt very weak and had lost a great deal in weight in the two days.
