PERSPICACITY

On the first page of the Preface of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy says, "The time for thinkers has come," and throughout the entire book it is apparent that her great desire is centered in having each of her followers do his own thinking intelligently and irrespective of dicta, suggestions, or importunities of others. The mental attitude which is always suspicious and carping about every statement made, is trying and objectionable, and it is natural, normal, and proper that we believe what is told us in the ordinary experiences of life. It would be sad if it were otherwise. Yet this should be done with thought and not by impulse.

The beginner in Christian Science who has experienced the spiritual exaltation which is usually incident to the healing of physical disease, but who has not become sufficiently familiar with the Science to know that the healing is in exact accord with divine law, is apt to look upon Christian Science and the healing work as supernatural. Such a one, when told that Christian Science is equally efficacious in business difficulties as in physical disorders, is apt to jump to the conclusion that any business with which a Christian Scientist is connected must perforce be immediately and immensely profitable, while the thinker, the one who reasons from cause to effect, knows that the operation of Science is the manifestation of Principle in accordance with, divine law, and that business success must be in accordance with, and not contrary to, the strict requirements of the fundamentals laws of commercial life.

To most of us money is the measure of substance, and when we read, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," we are inclined to expect very large additions in return for a very small amount of seeking. And so it comes about that the Christian Scientist, although declaring in a perfunctory manner that he reflects intelligence, is nevertheless often so carried away by the promise of large returns for an investment that he does not manifest intelligence in analyzing the business propositions which are made to him, or in fully considering the interest or incentive of the one soliciting the investment.
