It is with deep gratitude for all the benefits I have received through Christian Science that I write this testimony. When I first heard of Christian Science, about two and a half years ago, I was in a very hopeless condition, having just received the verdict of several of the best doctors in the place that it was impossible for me ever again to return to my work, that of boiler making and steel ship building; or, in fact, to do any hard work, on account of serious trouble with my heart. I was unable to walk far, and had become a slave to the drinking habit during the very severe illness through which I had just passed.

A copy of the Christian Science Sentinel was sent to me by one who had heard of my illness, with a request that I read it. I did so and I at once realized that here was love, and if there was any truth in religion (which I had almost ceased to believe), it was here. I at once began to take treatment, with the result that I was very soon able to walk far and fast, to run up and down stairs, or do anything that I wanted to, as the freedom from fear was wonderful; and for this I am very grateful. The habit of using bad language, a very violent temper, and other moral ills were overcome in the first few treatments. The medicine which I was taking was given up at once, and I have not taken any since or used any strong drink. In about three months I was back in the factory, taking my full share of the hard work, and at times working for thirty-five hours at a stretch, only stopping for meals. I have remained at the same work ever since, under all sorts of conditions of ship and boiler repairs, this last winter working for a greater number of hours than I have ever done, and with much less fatigue than before I knew of Christian Science.

I have had many proofs of the healing power of Truth. Soon after returning to my work I was attacked by a severe cold and for a day suffered greatly from it. I tried to use what little I knew of the truth, but did not have enough understanding to meet it. I was at work, lying in the bilges of the ship, and at dinner time it was with great difficulty that I climbed the ladders to reach the deck. I could not eat, so sent to the practitioner for help, and was instantaneously healed. I returned to my work at two o'clock, feeling like a new man, and was able to finish my job (which was urgent) in good time. I lost no time that winter through sickness, although two thirds of our men took a turn on the sick-list during that time.
