An annual appropriation of twenty million dollars for five years to improve the post roads and rural delivery routes of the government was urged in the Senate by Mr. Swanson of Virginia. He contended that, despite the amazing achievements in many directions scored by this country, it is notorious that the United States has the poorest public roads and highways of any civilized ration. He said he regarded the subject as the paramount one before the American people. His plan would open more than one million miles of roads to government aid, the states or local authoritics would furnish an amount equal to that appropriated by the federal government, and the total would be divided among the states, according to population.
The Smithsonian Institution has recently sent out an expedition to Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, for the purpose of collecting natural history specimens for the national museum. The expedition is the result of correspondence with the director of the Alpine Club of Canada, outlining plans for an extensive survey of the regions about Yellow-head pass, Mt. Robson, and Jasper park, in which survey the Smithsonian Institution was invited to participate.
The Massachusetts Senate has passed a bill permitting the Boston Elevated to absorb the West End railway and authorizing extensive additions to the subways, which are to be built by the city of Boston and leased to the Elevated. The public, the Public Franchise League, and the improvement societies took an active interest in the matter and forced the acceptance of terms favorable to the public.
