At the dinner table one evening there arose a discussion...

At the dinner table one evening there arose a discussion upon the merits of Christian Science, and during the conversation my husband said, "One of the prominent physicians of New York told me there was no possible chance for my wife to get well. She does not look like that now, does she?" I had never heard my husband make this statement before, and while I knew from my own experiences that the benefits I had received from the ministrations of Christian Science had been unnumbered and blessed, this statement seemed to place before me a vivid picture of the past—the wilderness I had come through—and a consequent realization of the present height I had reached. It also awakened a new sense of gratitude for the wonderful work that has been accomplished for humanity by Christian Science.

The glorious fact revealed by the Science of Christianity, that God is Life, this was the truth to which I clung when death threatened and appeared to be an awful reality. "God is light," the apostle John tells us; and this was the truth to which I clung when clouds seemed dark and heavy. John also declared, "God is love;" and to this most simple and yet most profound statement I clung when all seemed cruelty and hatred. I knew that there was absolutely no hope for me, as the physician said, except—which he did not know—in that great truth which a sweet and gentle woman was patiently pointing out to the world. I accepted the teaching and began to "work out" my salvation, and to "hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true" (Science and Health, p. 261). In so doing I proved the words of the Master to be true, and then came the great joy of helping others. That the divine Mind is the only Mind I proved in one treatment. My husband also was healed of an attack of illness by one declaration of the truth of being. Upon another occasion he came with a very troubled look and described a seemingly serious condition of the bowels, but in a short time he returned with a smile and declared that all was well.

These are some of the many blessings that have come to me through the right understanding of God, and I desire to express my gratitude to the great power that is governing the universe, and to the wonderful woman who has made it plain to us what that power is.
