The request that a court shall define Christian Science...

Thompsonville (Conn.) Press

The request that a court shall define Christian Science is a move that may have far-reaching consequences. Heretofore lay judges were called upon to decide questions that revolved around the external appurtenances of faiths, such as the right and limitation of property-titles. The inner character of a creed was not considered to come within the scope of a lay court's jurisdiction. If secular judges are now given the power, by this precedent, to determine what is and what is not contained in any church's deposit of faith, the way is being paved for unending dispute and the state is being urged toward a goal which wisely it has shunned. The introduction of Erastian policy is not without peril to a nation which has thrived on absolute separation of church and state.
