Our critic says that we do not believe in the reality of sin...
Miami (Okla.) Record-Herald
Our critic says that we do not believe in the reality of sin or disease. The writer has been studying authoritative works on Christian Science for a number of years, and has yet to find the statement that either sin or disease does not seem real to the average mortal man. Christian Science does teach, however, that neither sin nor disease is real in the sense that God is real, for to be so they would necessarily be eternal and there would be little hope of our ever being free from them. While Christian Science differs from some other theories in respect to the nature of sin and disease, it recognizes that they exist in erring mortal experience and must therefore be grappled with and overcome by divine power.
As to the assertion that Christian Scientists do nothing for the sick but to tell them that they are not sick, that there is nothing the matter with them, that they just think they are sick, and let it go at that, it would be difficult for one to make a statement farther from the truth than such a one as that, as any one who has taken the pains to investigate Christian Science knows. It seems that, irrespective of what our clerical critic may think of Christian Science, it continues on its mission of healing both sickness and sin. Any student of the Bible should be familiar with the method of treatment employed by Christian Scientists, for it is certainly made plain by that book from beginning to end.
It seems to offend our critic's sense of what is decent and proper for one who is at least trying to do the work laid out for those who would be followers of the Master to call themselves Christians. It seems to be customary for one who is proficient in music to be called a musician, and those who are able to demonstrate mathematics are sometimes called mathematicians, and I ask him in all fairness why he objects to those who are doing, in a degree at least, the work laid out by the master Christian calling themselves Christians.
