In the summer of 1905 I had a very severe attack of whooping-cough, which necessitated the services of a trained nurse and three physicians, and the disease left me much reduced in flesh and very weak. The distinctive cough continued late into the fall, and with cold weather bronchial and throat trouble from which I had suffered since childhood appeared. These left me with a chronic cough and an abnormal condition of the throat, which pursued me for two years. During this time I tried medicines prescribed by my regular physician, besides electric and other treatments; but in spite of all these efforts the condition continued unchanged, and a throat specialist recommended several operations on the nose as the only way of gaining possible relief. At this time I was forced to diet, because of other troubles, and was also taking large quantities of nutritive food, hoping to gain in strength and weight. Each winter I had several attacks of bronchitis, and each winter I went South to find relief through change of climate.
In May, 1907, after spending two months in the South, I went north to Chicago with my sister. No sooner had I left the South than the cough began again, growing a little worse each day. I knew that upon my arrival home in Syracuse I must have the operations on my nose, and that even these might not alleviate the trouble. With this before me, I decided to try Christian Science, and I was given the names of several practitioners. On the morning of June 3 I took the first treatment. I had no understanding of Science and told the practitioner I had no faith, but she said my willingness to come and ask for help was enough. I was with her about an hour and returned home. The weather was bad, with cold rain and lake winds, and my trouble had been growing steadily worse for two weeks, but I left my windows high up, as my physicians had taught me, expecting to cough during the night as usual. I did not, however, awaken until the next morning, when I sat up with a start, for the distressing sensation I had had for two years had left me. I could not remember coughing during the night, and I had then no desire to cough.
When I went for my treatment that day, I was told I need diet no longer for acidity. I resolved to test this and bought some fruit and candy, but neither had any effect on me; there was no effect on any of the secretions, and the body remained perfectly normal, although I took no medicines of any kind. Up to this time acids would cause trouble in the throat within two hours after eating, and the whole body suffered from the same conditions. I then tried giving up my special diet, expecting to lose weight, but at the end of one week I found I had gained instead of lost. This satisfied me, and I continued the treatment for about three weeks before returning East, and improved in health and strength continually.
