THE LECTURES

Bicknell Young delivered a lecture on Christian Science Feb. 18. He was introduced by W. F. W. Wilding, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., who said in part,—

We may recall how on one memorable occasion Pilate asked Jesus the question, "What is truth?" and it is generally believed that it was asked contemptuously, as if it were unanswerable. In the search for the truth about healing, the history of four thousand years of medicine is a record of constantly changing theories and methods of treating disease. The history of religion reveals constantly varying beliefs in regard to spiritual truth. Nineteen centuries ago the man Jesus was wandering about the countryside in Palestine, telling a wondrous story, a story so startling that people in their thousands flocked to hear him. This story was the truth about God and man, and his knowledge of it set men free from sin and disease; in fact, Jesus showed that the healing of the body was the natural outcome of the knowledge of the truth.

The very works of Jesus proved the truth of his teaching. Furthermore, Jesus taught that all men could repeat those wonderful works; in fact, that all who believed could and should repeat them. For he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." Now that was a declaration limited neither to that time nor to any time. It stands for all time, for all who believe; i.e., understand. We now generally believe that Jesus had full knowledge of the truth, that he knew all there was to know about healing, and that he taught and practised the true method of healing, for it is recorded, "He healed all manner of diseases."
