Christian Science has been almost unknown in Finland...
Christian Science has been almost unknown in Finland up to the present time. A year ago I heard about it from a friend, who urged me to seek help in Christian Science for my poor health. When quite young I was very nervous, the disease increasing with the years, and at times I was very ill. Although I had consulted several physicians at sanitariums and watering-places, I nevertheless got worse, and was sometimes obliged to be in bed for months at a hospital quite isolated. The doctor declared my illness to be incurable, and being so largely mental it caused me great suffering. At last it became quite clear to me that neither physicians nor medicine could help me; that if I ever became healthy, it must happen through a spiritual way. I had not then heard about Christian Science, but I felt a keen desire to know God, and I turned to Him with my whole heart. For a long time I had been seeking God according to the tenets of my church, but I never got any lasting peace or strength to resist evil. My mentality was in confusion, and I could not find any real satisfaction in religion; nevertheless, I felt I could not live without it.
Hearing then about Christian Science, I was surprised when it offered me just what I needed. In the spring of 1910 I made up my mind to go to Sweden (Stockholm), in order to get further information of this teaching, though I did it with some hesitation, afraid of being deceived. My knowledge of Christian Science was very small, but I had committed myself to God's care, and knew that I was following His guidance. After five weeks' treatment in Christian Science I was healed, and returned home to Finland, healthy, glad, and happy. With this testimony I gratefully wish to acknowledge what Christian Science has done for me. I have gained a sense of peace and harmony, such as I have never had before. The sense of sorrow, grief, and disappointment has quite vanished, and I have experienced abundantly the love of God and His omnipresent help in all our needs. I am now feeling quite well, and I have in certain respects become a new woman. I study Science and Health with great pleasure and interest, and I also have had much help from the Sentinel and the Journal.
Through my knowledge of Christian Science I have sometimes been able to meet my own and other peoples' occasional indispositions. My keenest desire is to have more understanding of Truth, in order to be able to help my brethren in their struggle against sin and disease, and thus contribute to the establishment on earth of the kingdom of God.—Ilma Sumelius, Tammerfors, Finland.
