It is with gratitude that I send this testimony of what Christian Science has done for me. In December, 1908, I came to the conclusion that I must overcome the drink habit, or I was lost. I had been drinking for thirty-five years,—the last year hardest,—so one Sunday morning I had my wife look up the address of a Christian Science practitioner in a copy of the Journal which had been sent me by a kind and loving sister who was a member of First Church, in Philadelphia, Pa., and had been sending me Christian Science literature for over two years, in the hope that it would appeal to me. My wife telephoned to a practitioner at nine o'clock in the morning, asking her if she would take my case. She did so, and gave me absent treatment immediately, also made an appointment to meet me at two o'clock that afternoon.
I had a long talk with her that afternoon, in which she pointed out the truth to me. I took a copy of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, home with me, and commenced to try, with God's help, to overcome the demon of drink. On Monday morning at ten o'clock, being in the city, I took my last drink, and have not touched intoxicants since, nor have I had any inclination to do so. I thank God that, although I have been where there were plenty of chances to be tempted, the appetite is gone! I had also chewed tobacco for thirty-five years and smoked for thirty-seven years, but in a month all desire for the weed was gone. This is not all. I was very profane, could not carry on ordinary conversation without using some oaths to emphasize it. That has all been dispensed with. I have joined the Christian Science church here, and am a regenerated man, morally, physically, and spiritually.
My hope and desire is that this testimony may be seen by some one similarly afflicted, for I know it was the power of Truth, and not will-power, that saved me and restored me to manhood. I thank God, and am grateful to our dear Leader for this wonderful teaching.
