While in Nome, Alaska, in 1904, Christian Science not...
While in Nome, Alaska, in 1904, Christian Science not only found me seeking gold, but also the truth. In talking with a friend about that Book of books, the Bible, I asked him if he could tell me of a book that would interpret the Scriptures. He then told me of Science and Health and brought it to me, and after I had read a few pages I told him that it was what I had been looking for. I purchased a copy at the earliest opportunity, and was so delighted over it that I bought two more for friends, only to learn later that it did not appeal to them at that time. Through a study of this book I learned and was convinced that God, good, could not be directly or indirectly conscious of, be the author of, or be responsible for, sin or error in any form. I then repented, and turned from evil-doing and sinful thoughts, and was amazed to find that I had been healed of a stomach trouble of many years' standing, and for which materia medica could do nothing. I was also cured of the drinking and tobacco habits, and the use of profane language. Last, but not least, the habit of evil thinking was overcome, for I had learned that the foundation of every disease is mental, and that all evil can be destroyed by the law of divine Mind.
The day before Christmas, while picking holly I got poison oak over my hands and arms, and to mortal sense this was always severe with me. The following Sunday, though I took part in the service, I thought I should have to remain at home, as my hands and arms manifested the effects of the poison; but I used the declarations of the truth, as given in our text-book, and went to church. During that service, the subject being Christian Science, I experienced a sense of peace and harmony—of Love's presence—not known to me before, and found my healing to be instantaneous, for that afternoon I cut off the bandages and next morning could only see traces of where the ailment had been. I compared this to a similar attack which occurred to me prior to coming into Science, and which under medical treatment was not relieved for three weeks. About one year ago I was healed of neuralgia through attendance at a Wednesday evening meeting, and I am convinced that healing is to be realized at every Christian Science service. How good God is, how willing to be our physician when we call upon Him in sincerity!
Words are inadequate to express my love to God, who heals all our diseases, for giving us our Leader, who has worked so patiently and lovingly to elucidate the Bible through our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."—J. R. Todd, Avalon, Catalina Island, Cal.
