As I look forward eagerly from week to week for the coming of the Sentinel, I wish at this time to express my appreciation and gratitude for the help received, by making this offering with the hope that it may contain some helpful thought for another searcher—even a "cup of cold water" to the thirsty. Many a time have I sat down to read the Sentinel, feeling burdened with some care; but by the time I had finished its perusal, the burden had been lifted.
About four years ago I slipped on a frosty doorsill and received a bad fall. At this time I did not understand that merely to ignore an ill is not sufficient. I thought that by paying no attention to it, there would be no bad results. The next morning I was quite ill, with a high fever and pains and aches all through my body. I began to read Science and Health, but not being able to help myself, I called upon a friend for assistance. By the time she arrived, about two o'clock, I was no longer able to sit up, in spite of the strongest efforts of the human will; but in a very short time I felt the effect of her treatment, and inside of half an hour was perfectly well. This was convincing proof that Christian Science heals and heals quickly, the truth going "even to the joints and marrow," as the Bible teaches.
About a year after this we moved into another community, and the necessity of working out my own salvation, instead of depending upon my friends, was impressed upon me, and I began to study very earnestly. A short time after this I slipped on a wet mossy board, and had another bad fall, worse, if anything, than the other, as in trying to protect myself I instinctively put out my right hand, thus wrenching the wrist badly and straining more or less all the muscles involved in the arm and shoulder. My first thought was one of fear—What if I should again become ill, as before? I would certainly not be able to overcome it, and my friend was not at hand! My next thought was that I must not let it attack me, that I must grapple with the error before it got the upper hand. With this purpose in view, I began to declare vehemently, as Mrs. Eddy tells us to, that matter is not man, etc., following up the line of thought as given on page 475 of Science and Health in answer to the question, "What is man?" This was sufficient to overcome the enemy, for the happy result was that there were absolutely no bad effects, not even a soreness of the muscles or any discoloration.
