AMONG THE CHURCHES

The members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, dedicated their church building, Fifth street and D avenue, during the regular Sunday night service last evening [Jan. 1]. The ceremonies, aside from the regular service, consisted chiefly of a historical sketch of the church in San Antonio, which was read by John W. Fraser, president of the church. The members of the church have been using the present building since 1903, but it received its formal dedication last night because it is a custom among Christian Scientists to defer the dedication until a building is fully paid for. The historical portion of Mr. Fraser's address was in part as follows,—

"It seems meet at this time to refer to a few of the stages of this church's progress, as gleaned from the pages of its history. In April, 1893, a number of loyal Christian Scientists met at 640 Soledad street in this city and organized a Christian Science society. Services were held there about one year, when a larger auditorium was neede, and the place of meeting was changed to 629 North Flores street. After two years' services at that place, the congregation was able to secure more convenient quarters down town, in the Chandler Building, at 104 East Crockett street. Services continued here until October, 1898, when this building was leased, and it has been the church home ever since. In the mean time, in April, 1898, the society was merged into First Church of Christ, Scientist, and a charter was secured from the state of Texas. On March 7, 1903, this building was purchased by the church, largely on time, and the last payment did not mature until next March, but the debt for the church as well as for the organ and seats and repairs has all been paid."—San Antonio Express.
