Shortly after the earthquake in San Francisco, my boy,...
Shortly after the earthquake in San Francisco, my boy, nine years old, while coasting on the park panhandle, utterly unconscious of any danger, was run down by an automobile going at great speed. I had been obliged to cross the bay that day on business, and was to be gone until evening, leaving my daughter at home to attend to the various duties; but before the noon hour one of my boy's playmates came hurrying to our home with the news that he had been run over. He had been picked up unconscious and taken to an emergency hospital, but finding that the case was very serious, they had taken him to the city and county hospital, as they did not know who he was.
My daughter gave the boy the address of a practitioner, and asked him to tell her what had happened. She then took Science and Health with her, and went to the hospital. On arriving there she found that they were already operating on my boy's head, so all there was to do was to try and realize the ever-present Life for her dear brother. On my arrival home I was met by a lad, who inquired anxiously how my boy was. I had left him home a few hours before in perfect health and happiness—what could it mean! I never knew how I got up the stairs, but half way up a dear friend met me and told me what had happened. I went out to the hospital, and from that time we never left him, one relieving the other and taking word to the faithful practitioner three times a day, as we were not allowed to move him. Three or four doctors attended him every day, and were more than kind, but each made mortal-mind laws for him, giving little or no encouragement. Each day the practitioner was informed of their fears, and through her understanding that God's law of life is eternal and harmonious, our dear boy was freed from the belief in manmade laws. It was simply wonderful how every adverse symptom was met in a divinely natural way.
One day a famous army surgeon who had come from the East, and who had performed the surgical operation, spoke to my daughter and told her plainly just what he thought, and said he wanted the boy's mother told the truth; that there was very little hope. My daughter did not come home and tell me then, but told the practitioner the doctor's fears, and in a very short time that prediction of death was overcome, and in nine days I was able to bring my boy home. The stiches taken over the eyebrow the doctor said would cause the eyelid to droop, which it did at first; but this was overcome in a month or so, and the deep scars caused by the operation, which the doctor said the boy would always carry, have almost entirely disappeared. My son has been perfectly well ever since his recovery, and at the physical examination in his school he was pronounced perfectly sound. He is also well advanced in his studies, standing high in mathematics, showing that there was no mental impairment from the terrible injury to his head.
