In August, 1907, I first tried Christian Science for physical healing. My condition at that time was very critical, as I was suffering with a serious lung trouble and was daily using four different medicines for it besides external applications. I was troubled with rheumatism, for which I had taken a great deal of medicine and had been operated on several times without relief, the doctors telling me that it was of a chronic nature, but not necessarily fatal. I had also suffered from a bowel disorder for over three years. In addition to these physical ills, I was a heavy smoker and had a very bad temper.
The one who brought to me that which I now prize more than anything else was a Jew. I had mentioned to him that I was forced to leave the cottage I was then occupying, to live in the country, for the sake of my health, and he told me that God was no more in the country than in town, and that in God was our health and strength. How those words have clung to me from that time, and how true they have proved! I cannot express my gratitude for them. He then told me, to my surprise, that he knew a little body of Christian people in Cape Town who could heal all kinds of disease, and explained to me as well as he could what Christian Science Mind-healing is. He also told me some of the wonderful things that had been done by it and the great help his own son had received in a very short time; so I decided to see if it could do anything for me.
I have not used any medicine since that date. My recovery from the sciatica, bowel trouble, and tobacco habit was very rapid, for within a month they all left me, and up to the present time have not returned. With regard to the tobacco habit, it did not even require a resolution to make me give it up, for the desire left me one morning while I was at work, and when I went home at lunch-time I threw all my pipes and tobacco in the fire and have had no desire for them since. The lung trouble has left me and I am daily gaining in health, strength, and weight.
