I first heard of Christian Science through some Sentinels...
I first heard of Christian Science through some Sentinels sent to me from England by my mother while I was on military service with Compton's Horse, during the late Boer war. I was impressed with the truths contained in these, and passed them on to my comrades, who I am pleased to say also appreciated them. About four years after peace had been proclaimed, I was stationed up country, and received a further batch of Sentinels from my mother, and these appealed to me so much that I resolved to forward them to some intimate friends in Johannesburg. On my return to that city, I found that they were already stanch students of Christian Science. When the beautiful teachings of Christian Science were explained to me by those dear friends who were more advanced than myself, I felt sure that the truth of being was to be found in Mrs. Eddy's logical interpretations of the Scriptures, and that I had found the spiritual "meat" which scholastic theology knows not of; but it remained for me further to learn and demonstrate the truth of Christ Jesus' saying, "The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth." Through an earnest study of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I have become possessed with a great desire to help others who have not yet heard of the great good that has been done in the world by the truths contained in this book, and have had the inestimable satisfaction of helping them to overcome many forms of disease. I was also healed in a few minutes of a fever contracted in Sumatra many years ago, and which in the old thought I had regarded as chronic. It also enabled me to overcome pain instantaneously, besides helping me financially.
I will relate a case of a serious accident that occurred some months ago while I was out walking. I was some fifteen miles away from civilization, on the borders of Swaziland and Barberton, when I stepped into the jaws of a powerful tiger trap, concealed from view. It closed with a snap and held me with a viselike grip, but I succeeded after a time in releasing my foot. In so doing, however, I got both my hands caught. The sharp teeth of the trap penetrated the fingers, causing intense agony, the blood also flowing freely the while. I called for help, but there was no one within hearing, although there was a native village about half a mile away. In my extremity I began to realize the presence of divine Mind, that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble;" then the pain ceased at once. The thought then came to me to jump on the springs of the trap, which I did, and to my intense joy the jaws opened for a moment and I got my hands free! I had been fully twenty minutes in this dreadful predicament. My fingers had become discolored and were lacerated and sore, but by using the little understanding that I had gained through the study of Christian Science, the blood ceased to flow and the wounds were scarcely visible and had become almost healed within an hour. Feeling none the worse for this experience, I finished my long walk, and that same evening was able to do some writing. Next morning I did my usual office work.
For these manifestations of divine Love, and for all the good that has come into my life, I give thanks to God, and am most grateful for Christian Science.
