STONES FOR THE TEMPLE
One day, while on the property where the building of our new church edifice, viz., First Church of Christ, Scientist, Johannesburg, South Africa, is in progress, I watched the masons as they chiseled the rough stones of different shapes into proper square blocks fit to be used in the construction of the building. Many of these stones were of very awkward shapes, and ever so much had to be chiseled away before they got dressed into a proper form of usefulness; while others were of better shape, and hence it took much less time to prepare them.
It then struck me how this process applies symbolically to ourselves. The grand architect of the universe, the eternal builder and unchangeable God, enables us through the recognition of divine Love to purify our modes of thought from erroneous or mortal beliefs into the understanding of divine Truth, though the progress may sometimes appear slow to our impatient sense. Some of us have many rough edges to be chiseled away, others are sooner ready to comprehend or grasp the truth; but ultimately we become fit stones as God's perfect idea, to serve in the construction of the main building, not made with hands, "the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle" (Science and Health, p. 583).
I am thankful to God for the knowledge of Christian Science, and the blessings and benefits that have come to me; also that I have been led to strive to obey the Master's command. I feel deeply grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, as the great metaphysical architect and "wise master builder" of this age, to whom belongs the credit for having again made known to mankind that indestructible house, "whose builder and maker is God."
