[Written for the Sentinel.]

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

He loved much. From his rugged heart
A stream of warm compassion flowed;
He paid the debt his greatness owed,
And nobly played his hero-part.

To those in bondage and oppressed
He heralded bright freedom's day;
Followed the light in humble way,
And left to God and Truth the rest.

Now those from whom the shackles fell
Publish his praises through the land,
And those who knew him—touched his hand—With reverent lips his virtues tell.

He loved much. Aye, and much is loved;
The memory he left behind,
Of loving heart and dauntless mind,
The years have tested and approved.
